Janelle Ranek returns with a new and unparalleled mind blowing one woman show. Not a timid ride, she explodes onto the stage with 12 characters revealing their dirty little secrets, rants, and skewed perceptions of life. Far from a sedentary experience – humanity stripped of the technology of computers, e-mail, faxes, cell phones, and even land lines, the show sizzles with outrageous comedy. “SCRAWL” cuts to the bone with raw exposed humor from characters who at first seem insane, but in reality are more sane and balanced than the rest of us.
New characters, and old favorites, show up with new stories and dementia. Mary the cat lady, a story teller with a sincere distaste for children, lost in her world of cat reality, Little Nell – raw, street smart, spitting her rage about today’s society with rap, the paranoid one who cannot reveal her true name, even to her diary, the cynical, the absurd, the un-medicated, and of course Gloria, the martini drinking chain smoking crass old broad, one of Ranek’s signature characters, back with more advice for the audience, answering their questions live every show.
Ranek’s transformational style of multi character portrayals has been compared to Gilda Radner and a powerhouse one woman Saturday Night Live (the old days). The audience is a part of each characters birth, as Ranek transforms again and again from a blank slate into a whole human being. At times it’s hard to believe there is just one woman on stage.
The show is an emotional ride of hysterical comedy, subversive jogs of reality, and unexpected surprises.
